My 10x Goal: Technology + Social Impact

A miniature figure reaching toward a light bulb.

Two years ago I got inspired by a question someone asked me "What might you do to accomplish your 10-year goals in the next 6 months?"

A thought-provoking question and I gave it some thought.

At the time, I was working to create more awareness about the opportunity of social enterprise. I had started the Jindal Centre for Social Innovation & Entrepreneurship to do just that, but to be honest, I wasn't having much success.

I was convinced (and still am) that social enterprise the future of capitalism. As it turns out, so is Mark Cuban (http://bit.ly/MarkCubanSocent).

So...in 6 months, a 10-year goal to build substantial awareness about social enterprise. First thought: Use technology. The first step: Make a great website.

Later that same year, Sara Calvo reached out to me with an idea. We had never met, but she had seen the website and thought we might be a good partner. A Skype call, one month of collaboration and we put together a proposal to fund the idea.

The idea? To create a massive open online course (MOOC) on social enterprise.

A few months later we received funding from the British Council and partnered with FutureLearn.

As of yesterday, our MOOCs on social enterprise have reached 27,965 students from over 150 countries.

A little longer than 6 months, but that's a lot of awareness building.
